Carolina Parakeet
Acrylic on USA 5 Dollar banknote
The Carolina Parakeet was the only indigenous North American parrot within its range. It lived in old-growth forests along rivers and swamps and began to disappear as these were felled. Also mercilessly hunted as it was considered a crop pest, feeding on the buds of fruit trees, it had a fatal habit of flocking back to dead and dying birds shot by hunters, enabling mass slaughter.
