Ivory Billed Woodpecker
Acrylic on USA 1 Dollar banknote
60 x 95 mm
This magnificent woodpecker is presumed extinct, though there have been tantalising reports of sightings over the years. Each pair needs six square miles of old-growth swamp forest in Louisiana and other South Eastern US states. They only eat the beetle larvae and other grubs that live in these ancient trees. Their demise came about when the forests were felled to build the railways.
