Linnets are down 60% in numbers in the UK in 40 years, which parallels the reduction in their traditional farmland habitat of rough meadows, overgrown hedgerows and flower-rich field margins, where they find their food of seeds and insects.

Modern industrial farming does not value such places, but this need not be the case, and with the political will more could be done to set aside sections of land to grow more wildly and freely, for the benefit of linnets and countless other species of birds and insects.
