The European roller has not nested in the Czech Republic since 1987. The reasons are fragmentation of its habitat of dry and steppe grassland, now transformed into farmland. They suffer badly from hunting when migrating over the Mediterranean and North African coasts and from the loss of wintering grounds in the Sahel and Southern African plains.
