Bittern
Gates Gardens, London E2
Bittern are very rare in this country. They depend on extensive reed beds, most of which were drained for agriculture over the last few hundred years. Organisations like the RSPB and the Wildlife Trusts are working to reclaim and manage old degraded reed beds that have become overgrown with scrub and they are creating new ones.
Bittern are now even found in London at the Barnes London Wetland Centre
